The Word of God also teaches us about the sinful nature of man in Galatians 5:19-21.These traits serve as a contrast to the Fruit of the Spirit. Our human nature can lead us towards a sinful nature, but when we receive eternal salvation, we are choosing to be led by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit gives us the grace and strength to fight the desires of the flesh and lead a God-centred life reflecting His will and the Fruit of the Spirit in our daily lives.
The Bible teaches us in Galatians 5: 22,23 (KJV):
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
The first fruit is love — not human affection, but agape love: sacrificial, unconditional love that God has for us (John 3:16; 1 John 4:8). This love flows even towards enemies, as Christ taught. Joy is a deeper happiness rooted in salvation and His presence (John 15:11). Peace comes from knowing God is in control (Philippians 4:7). Patience reminds us of His long-suffering with us. Kindness shows in compassion and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32). Goodness reflects integrity and righteousness. Faithfulness proves trust even in trials. Gentleness is strength with humility. Finally, self-control helps us resist temptation and live in holiness.
Our Lord possesses every trait that we have discussed. The presence of the Holy Spirit in us gives us the strength to mirror the Lord in our lives. In this humanly form, it is impossible for us to be as perfect as our Lord, however we must live every day striving to be like Him in everything we do.
This is not something we follow only on certain days or when we feel like it, it’s a continuous progressing process. It is our Lord’s desire that our lives exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit. The more we walk with Him and immerse ourselves in His Word, the more we can become the Bible that people around us read.
May His Name be Glorified.
